National Small Business Week: Support Small Businesses!

Owning a business is not an easy feat.  It takes a lot of time, dedication, patience, and capital to not only start the business but to keep the business running.  National Small Business Week is one week where some of the top entrepreneurs and business owners in the United States are recognized for their work.  There are many honors given out during the week that will showcase some of the most recognized businesses and business owners.

National Small Business Week is led by the US Small Business Administration (SBA).  This event will be held this year from April 29th through May 5th (2018).  The ceremonies will be streamed live online courtesy of the US Small Business Administration.

Why Does National Small Business Week Matter?

I found an article on Business.com that spoke about National Small Business Week and it had an interesting piece that I want to share below.  The title of the section in the article is called “Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy.”

“According to the SBA, more than half of Americans own or work for a small business.  Entrepreneurs also help create two out of every three new jobs in the United States, yearly.  Since the week-long event was first issued in 1963, the number of small businesses created has continued to rise.  Fewer businesses are failing, too.  Although it is quite popular to cite startup failure statistics — particularly in their first year — the reality is that 50 percent of small businesses survive five years or more in business.”

It’s a shame that so many people frown upon small businesses these days and only want to do business with larger corporations.  Sure, they might employ more workers and bring in more revenue, but small businesses are the exact same thing only on a smaller scale.  I encourage you to look at small businesses and consider giving them some of your business, and not just during National Small Business Week, but all the time.  They are hard working American’s just like everyone else who are trying to get their product or service out in front of people to solve problems.  Heck, I’m a small business.

I hope you take the time to pay attention to those who win awards during National Small Business Week.  While I’m not up for any nominations or awards (bummer), I’m extremely proud of the growth we’ve had over the past two years in business and am excited to see what the future holds.  I know that with your support we are capable of doing big things.  Thank you all for being a part of my journey building Weik Fitness, LLC.  It’s going to be a great year because of you.  Thank you!
