Is the RangeTech Shot Timer Something You Should Invest In?

If you do any type of shooting at a range, the goal should be to work on improving your skills, not simply sending rounds down range. To do this, a shot timer can absolutely help you track your data. While all shot timers do about the same regarding functionality, the RangeTech Shot Timer may be a better investment when looking at the available options.

Now, I’m not going to pretend that I’m a shot timer expert. In fact, I only started using one around five years ago. When I first got started using a shot timer, I went with a choice that you’ll see many on the range with, and that’s the Pocket Pro Timer.

Is there anything wrong with the Pocket Pro Timer? No, not really. However, the controls are somewhat confusing to many people if you hand them your timer, the display is incredibly small (and I have good eyesight), they eat batteries like Cookie Monster devours cookies, and the price tag isn’t exactly something that fits into everyone’s budget.

The RangeTech Shot Timer solves many of these issues, which we are going to get into shortly. But first, let’s get a better understanding as to what a shot timer is and why you would even want to consider one.

Disclaimer: Full disclosure, RangeTech did send me their RangeTech Shot Timer to test out and compare to the shot timers I currently use. Them sending me this shot timer does not sway my opinion of the product, how it functions, or even if I would recommend it. The thoughts and opinions in this article are my own, and I was not asked to do a review on this product, nor was I paid to write a review.

What is the Purpose of a Shot Timer?

They say that a target measures accuracy while a shot timer measures speed. Well, they’re not wrong. Both are necessary to improve your shooting skills. A timer holds you accountable for how quickly you can get your first shot off as well as subsequent shots and their split times.

A shot timer is a truly humbling piece of gear that any shooter should have in their range bag. You may be a good shooter when stress levels are controlled by you, but when you introduce a shot timer and need to hit specific benchmarks to understand skill and proficiency, your ego will be checked.

The great thing about a shot timer is that it provides you with the necessary data to understand if you’re getting faster. You’ll never know if you’re improving if you’re not testing and looking at data. During each range session, you should be training to push yourself and improve your shooting ability.

It should be noted that if you’re just starting out with a shot timer, don’t expect to come out of the gates shooting like a competitive shooter. Take things slow and incrementally make them a little spicier by getting to the gun and getting that first shot off quicker.

As you get better, run some industry-standard drills to see how you’re progressing. To make your range experience even more fun, run drills with a friend and check your times to see who had a better time and better hits on the target.

Why Would You Want a RangeTech Shot Timer Over Another Brand?

If you don’t care about becoming a better shooter, then don’t worry about shot timers. It’s truly as simple as that. If you want to go send rounds down range and don’t care about speed and proficiency, then this product isn’t for you. That may sound somewhat harsh, but the reality is that this is a tool that provides you with data, and why waste your money if the information is of no interest to you?

Each time you go to the range, you should be focusing on your training and what skill you want to improve. Maybe it’s time to first shot? Perhaps it’s your splits and cadence? Regardless, when you have digital data that is recorded, you have information you can go back to and see how you’re improving over time.

The unit itself is incredibly small and easily fits in a range bag. The batteries seem to last forever (at least in my case, which I can’t say for the Pocket Pro Timer), and when they do die, it’s rechargeable.

To cue you, the sound on the product is great so that you know when to start the drill. The microphone is somehow magical that it can pick up your fire and not those in the lane next to you. And it connects easily to a smartphone to record all of your data and allows you to use the shot RangeTech Shot Timer to its fullest extent.

I also like that the RangeTech Shot Timer is loaded with features and benefits and is less expensive than many of the timers we all have in our range bag. Not to mention you get a much bigger screen to view all of your data versus those tiny displays on other shot timers that you need a magnifying glass to read.

Here are some of the benefits and specs directly from the RangeTech Shot Timer website:

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 8 hours run time (never buy batteries again)
  • Connects Via Bluetooth to our FREE mobile app (downloadable to any iOS or Android device)
  • Turn on optional Preparatory Commands – “Shooter Ready, Standby” and other options before the timer starts (Your Phone will give you a command in advance of the start beep)
  • Auto Restart – For quick repetitions of the same drill, you can set the app to automatically restart between reps
  • Choose from various start beep sounds and optionally use a bright LED green “go” light
  • No Shot Limit in total or per string
  • Auto-Scoring based on USPSA, IDPA, Multigun, Steel Challenge, and other pre-programmed scoring schemas
  • Take pictures of your targets and attach them to the string of data for later review
  • Lifetime Limited Warranty protects against ANY manufacturer defects
  • 100% Made and Manufactured in the USA by an American Small Business consisting of defensive and competitive shooters

Would I Recommend the RangeTech Shot Timer?

I really like the RangeTech Shot Timer. There’s no other way to say it.

  • I like the technology
  • I like the price
  • I like the size
  • I like the ease of use
  • I like that it’s a single button
  • I like that the battery is rechargeable
  • I like that you can check your time and splits on your phone or tablet (much easier to look at than the Pocket Pro Timer)

If you want to have some fun at the range while also getting better as a shooter, I’d definitely invest the money into a RangeTech Shot Timer. I’m not making a single penny from this article/review and have no affiliation with RangeTech as a brand. So, whether you buy one of these or not doesn’t affect me one way or the other. However, owning one may make you a better shooter. And I don’t think anyone will argue about that as a result.
