Lack of Content Creation Could Be Slowing Your Growth

The goal of starting a business is to grow it, right? Yet, 90% of businesses will fail within five years of opening their doors. Why is that? Well, there are several reasons, one of which is they aren’t getting the attention needed to put eyeballs on their brand. The good news is, I have a perfect strategy to build awareness and attention and it’s through content creation.

A Business Without Sales Will Soon No Longer Be a Business

There’s a simple concept that I like to tell people, and that concept is that money follows attention. If you tell me you aren’t making any money with your business, my first response will be that clearly, no one knows you. That’s not meant to be a shot taken at you, but rather, facts. People buy from Nike and Adidas because they have everyone’s attention. That’s why they are two of the largest apparel brands out there today and why smaller apparel brands are basically unknown. It all comes down to ATTENTION.

When you have the attention of your demographic and you engage with them, you build awareness – which is 100% necessary to grow your business. The fewer the number of people who know about you, the smaller your business will be. The greater the number of people who know about you, the larger your business will be. Simple concept, right? I think we can all agree to that?

Content creation is a fantastic way to not only build the attention you need but also help educate your consumers and become an authority in your niche. Content creation can be in many different forms. You can create video content, written content, and/or audio content. Notice how I put “and/or” in the previous sentence? What I really should have said is AND. But consider starting whichever you have the means to do so immediately – don’t wait!

Create ALL the Content

Keeping the momentum going from where we left off, content creation shouldn’t be looked at as wasted time. Everyone thinks that spending thousands of dollars every month on advertising is a great idea – it’s not. In fact, it’s a really dumb idea if you don’t know what you’re doing. You’ll end up burning money quickly. People spend thousands of dollars to run a 7-day advertising campaign when at a fraction of the cost they could have put that into months’ worth of content creation that lives evergreen on their website and can be reused over and over again (at no additional cost). It’s brilliant!

And I’m not talking about going down just one path of content creation, I want you to utilize ALL forms of content creation. What that means is taking one piece of content and repurposing it across all mediums. For instance, you can take a video you created and break that down into audio clips, and then those audio clips can turn into written pieces of content. All stemming from that initial piece of content.

Having content across all those platforms allows you to hit a wide variety of people. Some people prefer to read while others like to listen or watch. When you create content that suits all needs, you open up the door to make yourself and your brand more visible.

I have a chart below that better illustrates what I’m talking about above with content creation.

“If You Build It, They Will Come”

The ultimate goal of content is to build traffic to your website (create awareness and attention), add value from your content pieces, and convert sales. When you focus on content creation, it doesn’t end with just putting the content up on your site, you need to help get that information out there. You’re already familiar with social media, so it should come as no surprise that you need to have a business page on all the social platforms that your demographic is on.

Once you have business pages set up for social media, start pushing your content on those platforms to build traffic to your website. Once on your website, try to collect their email information so you have another touchpoint where you can reach out to them. Take the same content you put up on your website and include a teaser in an email blast to your list that links back to your website. This helps those who haven’t seen the content have a greater chance of seeing it. Again, it comes down to pushing your content out everywhere and allowing it to work FOR YOU without costing you a dime.

Content creation truly drives sales. When people feel comfortable with your brand, they are more willing to open up their wallet and make a purchase versus someone who doesn’t bring them value and is standing with their hand out expecting people to spend money with them. That ends in the slow death of the business.

When you focus on content creation, your content (whether you create it or pay someone else to do it for you) lives on your site forever. We call that evergreen. So, when people Google your topic or subject, you have a great opportunity to end up in the search results today, in a month, even 10 years or more down the road. Makes more sense when compared to the cost of a short-term advertising campaign, right?

Plus, you can have an omni-channel approach with your content. Have it on your website, have it on various podcast platforms, put it on YouTube, the list goes on and on with the value it can bring you.
