Are You Prepared for a Disaster with an Emergency Food Supply?

In today’s unpredictable world, it’s more important than ever to be prepared for emergencies. Whether it’s a natural disaster, power outage, or other unexpected event, having an emergency food supply can mean the difference between going hungry or having the sustenance you need to survive. And when there’s no fast food restaurants open, we both know all hell is going to break loose!

The goal of this article is to have you start thinking about your own preparedness. We are experiencing some major shifts that could cause panic instantly. Temperatures are higher than normal, farmers are having issues with crops, pandemics, the failure of the banking system, the dollar collapse, a weakened grid, and what many are fearing lately… an imminent kickoff to WWIII. Are you prepared?

This article is going to include something that I feel everyone should have in their preps, and that’s an emergency food supply that can get them through a minimum of 30 days. The Augason Farms 30-Day emergency food supply is a great product, one that I have, used, and recommend having at home because it provides a variety of long-lasting, easy-to-prepare foods from a reputable brand at a reasonable cost. And no, I wasn’t paid to say that (but if they’re looking to sponsor someone in the industry, hit me up!).

Without an emergency food supply, you may find yourself struggling to find food in a crisis situation, potentially putting yourself and your family at risk. Don’t wait until it’s too late to start prepping for an emergency — start prepping long-term food storage and even invest in a pre-made storage bucket or kit today to ensure you’re ready for whatever the future may bring.

Why Would You Want to Have an Emergency Food Supply?

This is a valid question. After all, we have grocery stores all around us. Unfortunately, if something major takes place, grocery stores will be the hot spot, everyone will be buying everything they can find on the shelves, and it can turn into total chaos. Remember the whole toilet paper fiasco during the pandemic? Think about that scenario on a larger scale where food is scarce, sanitation products are gone, and you have no means of electricity.

Not good scenarios, right? That’s why you should think about long-term food storage immediately to get ahead of the curve.

Having an emergency food supply at home is a good idea for several reasons, especially in the event of a disaster or emergency situation where people need to shelter in place or bug out.

Here are some of the key reasons you should consider when planning your emergency food supply:

Food Security

In the event of a disaster, access to food may be limited or disrupted, especially if there are power outages, supply chain disruptions, or other factors that prevent stores and restaurants from operating normally. By having an emergency supply of food at home, you can ensure that you and your family have access to food even if other sources are unavailable.

Peace of Mind

Knowing that you have a stockpile of food at home can provide peace of mind and reduce stress in emergency situations. Instead of worrying about where your next meal will come from, you can focus on other important tasks, such as ensuring your family’s safety and securing your home.

Cost Savings

Buying food in bulk for an emergency food supply can be more cost-effective than buying smaller quantities of food on a regular basis. Plus, you can often find deals and discounts when buying in bulk, which can further reduce the overall cost.

Customizable Options

When creating an emergency food supply, you have the ability to choose foods that you and your family like and will eat, rather than relying on whatever is available at the time of a disaster. This can help ensure that everyone in your household is well-fed and comfortable during an emergency situation.

What Should You Have in Your Emergency Food Supply?

When putting together an emergency food supply, it’s important to choose foods that are shelf-stable, non-perishable, and can be stored for an extended period of time. You will want to rotate your stock to ensure you use the foods with the closest expiration and put the ones with the best shelf-life in the back of your stock.

Here are some of the types of foods that are commonly recommended for an emergency food supply as well as some of the products I have, tried, and recommend:

1. Canned Goods

Canned goods are a good option because they are often shelf-stable for long periods of time and provide a good source of nutrition. Look for canned fruits, vegetables, meats, and beans.

2. Dried Goods

Dried goods such as rice, pasta, and beans are also good options for an emergency food supply. These foods can be stored for a long time, are often inexpensive, and can be used to make a variety of meals.

3. Nut Butters and Powdered Nut Butters

Peanut butter and other nut butters are good sources of protein and healthy fats. They are also shelf-stable and can be stored for a long time.

4. Crackers and Granola Bars

Crackers and granola bars are easy to store and provide a quick source of energy. Look for options that are high in fiber and protein.

5. Powdered Milk

Powdered milk is a good option for those who need a source of calcium and vitamin D. It can be stored for a long time and can be used in a variety of recipes.

6. Water

In addition to food, it’s important to have a supply of clean water. Store at least one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days (72 hours).

It’s also important to consider any dietary restrictions or food allergies when putting together an emergency food supply. Make sure to choose foods that meet the dietary needs of everyone in your household. Additionally, consider including a manual can opener, disposable plates, cups, and utensils, and a portable camping stove or heating source if possible.

Should You Invest in Pre-Made Emergency Food Supply Buckets?

Pre-made emergency food supply buckets like Augason Farms products can be a good option for some people, depending on their individual needs and preferences.

Here are some of the pros and cons to consider with pre-made buckets:

Pros

1. Convenience

Pre-made emergency food supply buckets are convenient because they come pre-packaged and ready to go. This can save time and effort when preparing for an emergency situation.

2. Variety

Many pre-made emergency food buckets offer a variety of foods, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. This can help ensure that you have a well-rounded diet during an emergency situation.

3. Long Shelf Life

Most pre-made emergency food supply buckets have a long shelf life, so you don’t have to worry about rotating stock or checking expiration dates as frequently.

Cons

1. Cost

Pre-made emergency food supply buckets can be more expensive than buying individual items in bulk.

2. Limited Customization

When buying pre-made emergency food supply buckets, you may not be able to choose the specific foods that you want. This can be problematic if you have dietary restrictions or food allergies.

3. Quality

The quality of pre-made emergency food supply buckets can vary widely, so it’s important to do your research and choose a reputable brand like Augason Farms.

Ultimately, whether or not to invest in pre-made emergency food supply buckets will depend on your individual circumstances and preferences. If you are short on time or want the convenience of having pre-packaged, ready-to-go emergency food, a pre-made emergency food supply bucket may be a good option. However, if you have specific dietary needs or want more control over the foods you include in your emergency food supply, you may be better off buying individual items in bulk and assembling your own supply.

Additionally, while the Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Bucket is a 1-person 30-day supply of food, you can portion that out for more people if you have a family. For instance, if it’s you and a spouse or another person, you can split the bucket in half and each of you would have enough food for two weeks. Or, if you have a family of four, you would have enough food for each person to last one week.

How Does the Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Taste?

Now, for the fun part. Who doesn’t like to eat? That said, I’ve tried many different brands who sell an emergency food supply bucket and actually considered going outside and just eating a spoonful of dirt instead.

It should be noted that obviously everyone has different palates and like different things. While many people say in a disaster they’ll “eat anything to survive,” that may be true for the first 24-48 hours, but after that it’s mentally going to beat you up. You want something that you’re not going to need to hold your nose when eating.

Being that I have tried many different Augason Farms products in the past, I went into this with the hopes that their emergency food supply was palatable and something I wouldn’t mind eating in an emergency.

Unlike many of the brands I’ve tried in the past, I had no issue with anything in the Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Bucket. While comparing each meal to the real thing prepared with fresh ingredients would be unfair, these meals were still flavorful and something my entire family could eat without complaining.

You can also purchase separate items if you wish to have more meals or snacks throughout the day or more variety. Something like freeze-dried and dehydrated fruit make for a great snack that can either be added to meals or consumed throughout the day for added calories and energy. If you are a fan of dried fruit, you can’t go wrong with any of their options. I actually use them as snacks (they’re that good).

Below are some (but not all) options of other products I have purchased and tried of Augason Farms that I would highly recommend:

Yes, I’ve purchased quite a few of their items. Yes, I only recommend things that I purchase and use. And yes, I can prove through my Amazon orders that I’ve purchased every single product that was just mentioned above (some of them multiple times) if anyone doubts me.

Would I Recommend the Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Bucket & What Would I Change?

Nothing in this world is perfect, so there can be critiques with everything. While I would absolutely recommend the Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Bucket to anyone, there are a few things that I want to touch on where they could improve.

Related Article: All Things E-Bike — The Ultimate Guide to Electric Bikes

The food has good flavor and while it’s on par with some of the other top brands, there is always room for a little improvement. Additionally, I’d like to see more protein in each serving. There are a couple brands out there that are really high in protein and while I’m not looking for crazy amounts per serving, I’d prefer to have each serving contain around 15-20g of protein. Other brands do this by adding actual protein sources that are freeze-dried and dehydrated, such as chicken or beef.

Augason Farms does have a 30-day food storage bucket that is slightly higher in protein and will increase your daily intake to 46g. It also increases the total servings to 307 and the total daily calories goes up to 1,854. So, if you were looking for higher calories, protein, and servings, you can also consider their 30-Day Quality Survival Standards Bucket.

Also, convenience is king in an emergency, and it would be great to be able to prepare the food in the pouch versus in a pot. By simply adding hot water to a pouch would be much easier if you’re on the go during a disaster or out in the wilderness hiking, etc.

But overall, the Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Bucket is fantastic. I think for what you’re getting, the quality, and the taste, it’s worth the money over many of the other emergency food supply brands on the market.

Full Disclosure: Augason Farms supplied me with an Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply Bucket that contains a 30-day ration of food. They did not pay me to do this article, nor did they have any say in what I wrote about the topic or their product. I simply wanted to get one of their buckets to try the food and ensure it’s something I feel comfortable recommending to you, rather than opening my own supply that I purchased. That said, I’ve purchased several of their other products and have tried them as mentioned in this article.
