Tapplock One: A Smart and Secure Biometric Padlock?

I hate having to carry around keys to unlock things — especially padlocks.  At the gym, I don’t want to carry around a key just so I can lock up my possessions and not have them stolen.  I hate the inconvenience of locking up my firearm cases with a padlock and then needing to fidget with the key when I make it to the shooting range.  I like convenience and ways to simplify my life.  That’s when I stumbled upon Tapplock.

When I first saw the Tapplock One, I thought to myself “how cool of a product.”  Then, reality sat in and I thought about all of the gimmicks that are out on the market today.  Does this thing actually work and if so, does it work flawlessly?  Well, I’m always one to protect my possessions and thought about all of the possibilities for the Tapplock One if it legitimately works.  So, I got one.

Details About the Tapplock One

The Tapplock One says that it can unlock using your fingerprint in 0.8 seconds — and that seems accurate.  It has the ability to store up to 500 fingerprints so you have more than enough capacity to have your entire family be able to use and access what the lock is securing.  There is also a Bluetooth feature that allows the lock to be unlocked via your smartphone when you are in the Tapplock app.  If you forgot your phone and lost all of your fingertips (weird scenario, but follow me on this), there is a morse code feature that still allows you to unlock the Tapplock.

Regardless of where you decide to use this lock, it can handle everything you throw at it.  You can use it outside as it is water resistant up to IP66, rust-proof, and rain-proof.  It will work withing -4F and 140F.  This has some great advantages that I will get into shortly.

The body of the Tapplock is forged with Zamak 3 zinc alloy metal and has a 7mm reinforced stainless steel shackle.  Getting into this product appears to be like trying to get into Fort Knox uninvited.  Tapplock has three different color choices to choose from: sterling silver, gun metal, and midnight black.  I, personally, got the gun metal and it’s got a great look to it.

One really cool feature is that the lock is rechargeable.  If you follow me or know me in real life, you know I love rechargeable everything and try to include it in my EDC.  I like the ability to simply recharge something versus the need to always put in new batteries (such as my new Olight S1R II 1,000 lumen flashlight).  That being said, when you charge the Tapplock for two hours, the charge will last you up to a year (or 3,500 unlocks per charge).  You can check the battery life at any point by using the app.

What can you use this lock for?

  • Lock up your bike
  • Lock up your shed
  • Lock up your gym locker
  • Lock up your gun safe
  • Lock up whatever the heck you want!

Worth the Investment?

Seriously, the Tapplock One worked in every scenario I threw at it.  I had it outside, inside, rolling around in my trunk, and tested it through multiple rain storms.  Heck, I even threw the dang thing to see how durable it was — and it seems bomb-proof.  I love the fact that you don’t need a key and you can access it extremely quickly and it works flawlessly every single time I tried.  Now, like any gadget that solves a problem and has the convenience-factor is going to generally come with a higher price tag.  While not completely unreasonable for what you’re getting, the Tapplock is more than your standard padlock and sits at $99 per lock unless you purchase a bundle of them which can save you a little money per lock.

Would I recommend the product?  The answer is definitely, yes.  I see a huge value from something like this (assuming you have a reason for needing it).  It’s not something I’d purchase just to have sitting around “in case you should find a reason to use it.”  If this sounds like a product you’d like to use, head over to their website to check out the offerings.
