Redcon1 MRE Bar Review: Mission Complete or Mission Failed?

Lately I’ve been on a protein bar kick. I’ve been buying them by the handful to test out and see which bars I like and which ones aren’t worth the hype and money. I’ve been watching what Redcon1 has been doing in the industry and from the outside looking in, it appears like they are doing well. Recently they launched their Redcon1 MRE Bar. As you know, I’m very picky with my bars since I’ve been so heavily involved with them when I worked for MET-Rx/Pure Protein/Balance Bar. Is the Redcon1 MRE Bar a direct hit or did it blow up in their face? Here is my Redcon1 MRE bar review.

Redcon1 MRE Bar Review

I’ll be totally honest, I can’t remember what I paid for this bar when I picked it up from my local retailer. However, I’m not even worried about it. The Redcon1 MRE Bar is delicious and in my opinion was worth whatever I paid for it. I tried all three flavors (Blueberry Cobbler, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Banana Nut Bread) and I can’t say that I disliked any of the flavors. That being said, the Blueberry Cobbler is damn near one of the best tasting bars I’ve ever had.

I will say this… at the time of writing this (May 24, 2018) there is a fourth flavor in the works and will be ready to launch about the same time that this review goes live. The flavor will be a Crunchy Peanut Butter Cup that I want to get my hands on. Redcon1 Owner, Aaron Singerman, is saying this new flavor will (in his opinion) their best selling bar flavor.

As I mentioned, the Blueberry Cobbler was my favorite flavor, but I wouldn’t turn down the other flavors by any means. To me, the Blueberry Cobbler was simply unique in the sense that not many brands out there have a blueberry flavored bar — and the ones that do didn’t taste like natural blueberry in my opinion. The Redcon1 MRE Bar had REAL pieces of blueberry in them. Additionally, I like the ingredient profile of the bars. I’m a fan of real food ingredients, I like the inclusion of gluten-free oats, good blend of protein sources, the dehydrated yam and sweet potato is unique in a bar, coconut water powder (generally not found in a bar), dehydrated Goji berries, and MCT oil just to name a few.

I reached out to a few of my friends who own supplement stores and all of them said the Redcon1 MRE Bar has been selling well for them. One even mentioned that the Redcon1 MRE Bar Blueberry Cobbler is their best selling bar — which is really impressive.

The texture of the Redcon1 MRE Bar was both soft yet had some “crunchy” parts which was a nice dynamic for a bar. The bar claims to be a meal replacement, which I guess it could be used as one. When I think of a meal replacement bar, I envision a bar that is 400 calories or higher. If I were to market this, I’d personally say it is a “lite” meal replacement bar. But, nonetheless, you could indeed use it as a meal replacement.

Would I recommend the Redcon1 MRE Bar? I definitely would. If you were going to try just one to see if you like it… you guessed it… try the Blueberry Cobbler first. If you like that then go ahead and branch out into the others — but the Blueberry Cobbler might spoil you, so be advised.
