BSN Protein Crisp Bar — Are They Worth Buying?

If you follow my work, you know I’ve been in the supplement industry for over a decade.  I built my supplement “career” with MET-Rx, Pure Protein, and Balance Bar – pretty much the King Kong of bar manufacturing.  Now, they just acquired Best Bar Ever as well to grow their portfolio.  I’m used to the taste of every single one of the bars they produced as it was my job to make sure they ended up in retail and in consumers hands.  I didn’t think there was anyone around who touched those bars or who could even come close, but the game has changed quite a bit over the last few years and there are some amazing bars now in the market.  So, where does the BSN Protein Crisp Bar rank on my list?  Is it something you should consider or should you save your money?

BSN Protein Crisp Bar

These bars aren’t really a “new” product, it simply got a new name and facelift.  These used to be called the Syntha-6 Protein Crisp.  Personally, I like that name better than BSN Protein Crisp Bar.  I think it helps tie in their flagship protein powder.  I picked up two flavors to try while I was at my local supplement store, and those flavors were Mocha and S’mores.  I chose these flavors because they were something different from the normal chocolate and peanut butter flavors that everyone comes out with (boring!).  I wasn’t sure what to expect with the “crisp” part of the BSN Protein Crisp Bar and was worried that it was going to make the texture odd.  I was wrong.

The BSN Protein Crisp Bar is legit!  The mocha, indeed, had the flavor of mocha and the s’mores also had the actual taste (something that most protein bars fail at).  I couldn’t tell you how many bars I’ve had over the years that didn’t taste anything like what the flavor was supposed to be.  From the two flavors of the bar I had, I’m willing to bet that all of their other flavors are delicious as well.

Texture was the biggest thing I was interested in finding out and it was actually really good.  The BSN Protein Crisp Bar had some crunch to it but it was more of a Rice Crispy type of crunch versus a hard texture crunch.  For a “crispy” type of protein bar, they were very soft and at no point did I feel like I was chewing rocks or cardboard.  There is one flavor of the BSN Protein Crisp Bar that I still need to go out and find, and that’s their salted toffee pretzel.  THAT sounds amazing!

The Breakdown

I was overall extremely happy with the nutritionals of the bar.  Each BSN Protein Crisp Bar had around 240 calories, 20g of protein, 24g of carbs, 7g of fat, and only 4g of sugar.  There are a total of six flavors available and I’d love to try the other four I didn’t purchase and see if they are as good as the two I had.

Would I recommend the BSN Protein Crisp Bar?  I sure would!  Even though they were only 240 calories, the bar filled me up and I could very easily see myself using these between meals to hold me over or when I need something to eat and am in a pinch without a meal.
