Multivitamin Supplements: Nutrition Alone Doesn’t Cut It

We would love to be able to hit our daily intake of all our vital micronutrients through the wholesome foods we consume, however, for many, we simply aren’t that diverse with our food selection. The American diet isn’t exactly what I would call “healthy.” And in order to fill all of the gaps in terms of micronutrients, we need to be eating a variety of fruits and vegetables each and every day. Are you? If not, you’re going to want to continue reading and consider using multivitamin supplements.

Building a Solid Base

Your health can be dictated by the things you put in your body. If you fuel it with junk, you’re not going to maintain your health long-term. You need to build a foundation based off of the healthy and nutrient-dense foods you consume on a daily basis. We are talking specifically about good-quality macronutrients — protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

The bulk of your vitamins and minerals should be coming from the foods you eat. However, there will be some gaps in the total micronutrient content. That’s where something like multivitamin supplements comes into play. Additionally, your sex and even your age can also play a role in what essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. For that reason, if you compare men’s and women’s multivitamin supplements (or even regular multivitamins compared to “senior” multivitamins), you will notice some subtle differences.

Researchers Are Promoting the Use of Multivitamin Supplements

I’m sure you have heard this statement a time or two… that if you are using multivitamin supplements and your urine is a bright yellow, that it means you are wasting your money and everything in your multivitamin just went down the toilet. This isn’t exactly the truth, as an excess of riboflavin will cause your urine to change color. Riboflavin is better known as vitamin B2 and will generally be found in almost all multivitamin supplements on the market. So, if the yellow urine test were true, then all multivitamins on the market would be worthless — which they aren’t.

A 2012 study from Harvard, which involved 14,600 physicians, found that individuals who took a daily multivitamin were eight percent less likely to form and develop cancer over the span of 11 years when compared to a group who used a placebo. Add that to the numerous health benefits associated with utilizing multivitamin supplements and I’m left scratching my head as to why people wouldn’t want to use multivitamin supplements.
