Kids Nutrition: We Need to Set a Better Example

We live in a world where convenience wins at just about everything.  Need food?  Grab some fast food at a drive thru.  Need some money?  Hit an ATM.  Have a question?  Ask Siri.  We seem to have everything at our fingertips today.  However, our kids seem to be suffering.  Especially when it comes to kids nutrition.  Childhood obesity is a real problem, and with the adult obesity rate seemingly increasing, kids are “learning” from their parents.

Kids nutrition is one area I feel needs more attention, and in order to do that, it needs to start in each of our homes.  I’m a parent myself and I live a healthy lifestyle where I exercise daily and eat nutritious foods.  Now, don’t get the idea that I’m some crazy person who only eats healthy food options.  I have cheat meals and “not so healthy” snacks every now and then.  But, kids nutrition from a snack standpoint is TERRIBLE.  It’s as if every snack option out there aimed at kids is full of sugar and processed junk.  Even “sports drinks” that are marketed as being healthy, truly aren’t.  While in school kids are served whatever the school provides, but did you know that summer break is causing many kids to gain weight?

In order to improve kids nutrition, we need to also focus on ourselves and lead by example.  If you eat McDonald’s every night, sit on the couch for hours watching television, and never exercise, what do you think your children will learn?  Your bad habits — that’s what.  If you want to see your children grow up and be healthy, then kids nutrition needs to be on your radar every day.  Start purchasing healthy food options and showing your kids that healthy foods taste great.  That kids nutrition shouldn’t involve foods high in processed sugar and crammed with chemicals and preservatives.  Supplying kids with healthier options in the long-term can help bring down the obesity rate in our country.

It all starts in our own homes.  Be the leader of your family and take command of the habits you form as a family.  Begin having family walks after dinner.  It’s a great time to get in some exercise, burn off extra calories, and be together as a family in the great outdoors.  In addition, start changing your nutritional habits.  Remove processed junk from the pantry and fridge, and replace them with wholesome nutritious foods.  If your children see you eating healthy and exercising, they are more willing to follow your model.  Take command of kids nutrition and your own to help live a long, healthy life.
