7 Tips on How to Become A World-Renowned Fitness Writer

When you look at businesses such as those in the fitness industry today, content is a powerful driver of traffic and revenue.  Where content is needed, usually an amazing fitness writer will follow.  But how do you become a fitness writer and take your passion and skills and use them to help a business grow?  Well, it’s not as easy as you would imagine, but with the right steps, you can make it a reality.

Now, I know many of you are going to say, “But Matt, why are you helping people get into an industry that you’re in?”  You’re right, I seem pretty stupid, eh?  Well, the fact of the matter is I’ve worked with over 100 supplement brands across the globe as a fitness writer and that’s not counting all of my other clients outside of the industry I write for.  I help them grow their revenue by writing content and copy surrounding their brand and produces/services.  I’m not concerned about what my “competitors” are doing or even who they are.  Heck, I even have a book published to help personal trainers grow their business which helps them compete directly with me.  But, I’m proud and honored of the fact that as a fitness writer I don’t market my business through any type of advertising.  My expenses for marketing the past two years has been $0.  All of my business has come from word of mouth or people I have connected with over the years.

So, if I can help someone move closer to their passion of becoming a fitness writer, I’ll feel good about knowing that.  If you follow my work, you already know I’m all about adding tremendous value and overdelivering on my work.  Therefore, I’m not afraid of helping someone out in my own space.  Heck, maybe at some point our businesses will cross paths and we can work together on projects?  Who knows?  But anywho, let’s get into how to become a fitness writer.

7 Tips to Become A Fitness Writer

Below are seven tips to become a fitness writer that you can use to grow your business!

1. Figure out what you’re good at

What is in your wheelhouse as a fitness writer?  Are you knowledgeable on topics such as health, fitness, wellness, nutrition, or supplementation?  You can either be a jack of all or narrow things down and find a niche that can stack the deck in your favor if you’re well versed on a very specific topic.  Either way, take a good hard look under the hood and figure out what topics you are proficient in so you can go out and market yourself as a fitness writer specializing in [enter your area of expertise here].

2. How much time do you have to offer as a fitness writer?

Are you planning on being a fitness writer as your full-time gig or is this a side hustle you are starting for some extra cash or simply to do something you enjoy/love?  Either way, you can still become a very successful fitness writer but it’s best to lay out your expectations up front.  For instance, what if you build your list of clients and it’s causing you to work every night to produce content after your 9-5 job and cutting into your family time.  Are you ok with that or do you want some downtime to relax?  Are you ok with walking away from money on the table to do that?  Or, are you willing to put in the amount of work necessary as a fitness writer to build your client list and eventually leave your job to become a full-time fitness writer (which honestly most people fail to make a living from doing)?

3. Will you work for free or as a fee-based fitness writer?

One of the hardest things you will need to figure out is if you will work for free or if you will have a set fee for content.  It’s my belief that your knowledge as a fitness writer and the value you bring to a client is worth something.  If you decide to go the free route as a fitness writer, that is 100% your right, but know that people will begin taking advantage of you once they know you’re “free to be used and abused” in a sense.  Personally, I’d rather see you work as a fitness writer for very little in the beginning and once you decide to get serious, then increase your rates to whatever you feel your time and value is worth.

4. Forums are your friend

If it wasn’t for forums when I first started, I don’t know if I’d be here typing this today.  I started answering health, fitness, workouts, supplement, and nutrition questions on forums back when I was in college.  Don’t think that competitors and businesses aren’t paying attention to those forums, because they are.  And if you want to be a fitness writer, you need to get your knowledge out in front of them by helping people.  Forums are the place to be.  Answer questions, bring value, be a wealth of knowledge.  People will start looking to you as an expert in the field.  Just keep adding value and you’ll be surprised at who reaches out to you for help.

5. Make a website

On top of working the forums, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for you to write content for your own website.  On your site, you can promote that you are a fitness writer, have some of your articles on the site where they can see examples of your work, and allow them to contact you with any questions they may have or if they want to use your services as a fitness writer.  A blog on your website would also be a great idea to talk about anything you wish and keep your followers/readers engaged.

 

6. Publish e-Books as a fitness writer

While writing articles and answering questions is great and necessary, if you want to add more credibility to your name as a fitness writer, consider publishing some e-Books on various topics (which you can also then repurpose and turn into audiobooks).  Not only can it help get your name out and add to your list of accomplishments, but if you decide to sell it you can make a nice little extra stream of revenue for yourself.  Publishing a book will require more work than something like an article, but in my opinion, it is well worth it.

7. Network

If you don’t know anyone, no one knows you.  Go out and network.  If you have the means financially, go out to the Arnold Classic, the New York Pro, the Pittsburgh Pro, the Europa, and the Olympia.  Pick and choose if you want to go to one, some, or all of them.  Network with as many people as you can.  You are able to put a face to your name and help make connections with others in the industry who might be in need of the services of a fitness writer.  Have business cards made with all of your personal information and hand them out too.  Tell them if they ever need a fitness writer for content, you would love to be of service.
