Modern Oats Chocolate Cherry: A Premium Oatmeal?

I’m not a big breakfast eater, although, I do love breakfast foods.  I follow an intermittent fasting program where I don’t eat my first meal until at least noon.  By that time, many would already be thinking about lunch while I’m only taking in my first meal.  Because of the way I structure my meals, I try to take in food that is high volume so that I stay satiated longer.  That being said, a food I like to consume are oats and oatmeal.  I found a new style of oatmeal that I wanted to give a try… Modern Oats Chocolate Cherry Premium Oatmeal.  Here’s my take on it.

Modern Oats: A Premium Oatmeal

The Modern Oats Chocolate Cherry oatmeal touts to be a “premium” oatmeal.  Do I agree with the claim?  Yes and no.  Does it have good quality ingredients?  Absolutely.  There are also some things I’m not in love with about the product.  To lay some groundwork for my comparison, I’m used to making my own oatmeal.  Plain oats with some Splenda and raisins.  I’ve also used some of the Quaker Instant Oatmeal packets in the past as well, but I wasn’t thrilled with the profile so I stopped making them.

When looking at the Modern Oats Chocolate Cherry profile, it has (per container) 310 calories, 7g of fat, 53g of carbohydrates, 7g of fiber, 20g of sugar, and 9g of protein.  For what it is, that’s a hefty profile.  If you compare it to something like Quaker Instant Oatmeal (Maple & Brown Sugar), the Quaker packets have 160 calories, 2g of fat, 32g of carbohydrates, 3g of fiber, 12g of sugar, and 4g of protein.

So, the Modern Oats Chocolate Cherry contains more protein and fiber (which I like), but it also has way more sugar and carbs.  Is this a deal breaker?  No.  But, I’d prefer something a little lower per serving.  Now, some of you are going to be yelling that the sugars are coming from organic cane sugar.  Cool bro, but “I” still don’t like it.  It claims to have a “touch of pure cane sugar” but when looking at the ingredient list it’s the second ingredient.

What I do like is that the Modern Oats Chocolate Cherry includes some extra goodies that make the oatmeal taste a little more pleasing and that’s through items like dried bing and Rainer cherries, coconut, almonds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, golden raisins, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds.  All things that are healthy and add some quality micronutrients to the product.

The product is non-GMO, 100% whole grain, and certified vegan.  They also mention that you can use the product to make healthy cookies.  But personally, I don’t think anyone can beat my homemade banana chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.

Would I Buy This Product to Use Regularly?

I’m not saying the product is expensive for what it is, but, you’re paying for the convenience of a pre-made oatmeal that all you need to do it add water/milk and you’re good to go.  That being said, it wouldn’t be something that I use all the time, but to change it up I’d definitely toss it in the mix.  I’d still prefer to make my own oatmeal (until someone makes a product that completely knocks my socks off).
