How to Start and Stick to a Workout Plan in the New Year

It’s here…  A new year!  Along with a new year comes all of the resolutions of starting a workout program and eating a cleaner diet.  People flock to their local gym and purchase a membership with good intentions of getting in shape and forming healthy habits.  Well, at least the new year starts with optimism and excitement, because a few weeks to a few months down the road almost all of these individuals who started a workout plan for their resolution have quit and given up.  I’d hate to call them quitters, but let’s call a spade a spade.  They have zero commitment and they probably didn’t have a plan in place to keep them on track.  That’s what this article is all about.  I don’t want to see you quit, and I don’t want to see you push off regaining your health and fitness levels until “next year.”  So, here is a laid-out plan on how YOU, can start and stick to a workout plan.

1. Write down your goals

The first thing you should do is write down your goals – preferably on a piece of paper.  Make sure they are realistic and measurable.  For instance, saying you want to lose weight, while it may sound good, is not a good goal.  Why?  Because you have no details, the goal is very vague.  That’s like someone asking what the weather will be and you tell them “warm.”  What the heck does that even mean?

A better goal would be to lose 20 pounds in five months and work that into your workout plan.  This is measurable by checking your weight on a scale, and it is realistic because you can lose one pound healthily every week for 20 weeks (five months).

Put your list of goals somewhere that you will see it often – like on the fridge, bathroom mirror, your desk, pantry, or any other place you will see it every day.

2. Plan and schedule everything

When I say everything, I mean everything.  Schedule every single one of your workouts for the week.  Make sure they go in your calendar and do not skip over them or remove them from your calendar.  Your health is a priority.  For that reason, it is in you calendar.  You don’t put trivial things in your calendar, right?

Plan your workouts before you get to the gym.  Know exactly what you will be hitting before you even step foot in the gym.  In addition, plan out your meals ahead of time and even better, prepare your meals for an entire week so all you need to do is grab them from the fridge and you are good to go.  This makes mornings a breeze when all you need to do is grab your already prepared healthy meal from the fridge and on your way to work you go.
