How to Be a More Productive Traveling Freelancer

Do you want to be free, travel anywhere, and still run your business and be connected? That’s exactly what I do. I’m a traveling freelancer (also referred to as a mobile freelancer)! Working behind a desk and working the normal 9-5 isn’t something I consider “ideal” or something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. With technology today, you don’t need to have an office in order to be productive and run and profitable business. In fact, I’m out enjoying nature and scenery while I write this blog. I love being a traveling freelancer — it’s complete freedom.

A common problem that a traveling freelancer can suffer from is loss of battery (charge) on your smartphone or tablet. If I don’t have to, I don’t want to carry around a laptop all day if I don’t need to. I like being minimalistic and only needing to carry my essentials. In order for me to write content or copy for clients, all I need is my smartphone or tablet. I can grab both of them and off I go anywhere I wish. Yet, in order to make my life easier, there are a few key accessories that I cannot live without.

How Much Money Can a Traveling Freelancer Make?

The income of a traveling freelancer can vary widely based on several factors, including the writer’s skill level, experience, niche expertise, the type of writing they do, the demand for their services, and the rates they charge. Here are some key points to consider when estimating how much a mobile freelancer can make:

  1. Skill and Experience: Experienced writers with a strong portfolio and a track record of delivering high-quality work tend to command higher rates than beginners.
  2. Niche and Specialization: Writers with expertise in specific niches (such as medical writing, technical writing, legal writing, etc.) often earn more due to the specialized knowledge required for those fields.
  3. Type of Writing: The type of writing also impacts earnings. For example, long-form articles, whitepapers, and technical content typically pay more per word compared to shorter blog posts or social media content.
  4. Client Base: Writers who build a roster of high-paying clients or work with reputable companies are likely to earn more compared to those who work with smaller clients or on content platforms.
  5. Rates: Writers can charge per word, per hour, or per project. Rates can vary significantly depending on factors like the writer’s location, industry standards, and the complexity of the content.
  6. Demand: High demand for a particular type of writing or expertise can lead to higher earnings as writers may be able to charge a premium for their services.
  7. Marketing and Branding: Writers who effectively market themselves, build a strong online presence, and showcase their expertise tend to attract higher-paying clients.
  8. Consistency: Freelance income can be irregular, so consistency in securing projects and maintaining a steady flow of work is important for stable earnings.

It’s challenging to provide an exact income figure because freelance writing income can range from a few hundred dollars per month to a substantial full-time income, and even more for highly specialized writers. Some writers supplement their freelance income with other side gigs or part-time work, while others build thriving full-time careers.

How to Stay Productive as a Mobile Freelancer

In order for me to be a productive mobile freelancer, I need power — and lots of it. In fact, I work so much off of my iPhone and iPad that I’m constantly plugging them both in to charge. Obviously, when I’m working at the lake or in the middle of the woods, there’s no place for me to plug in. For that reason and to increase productivity, I need portable charging devices.

Not only do I carry a solar charger, but I also carry a portable battery pack as well. Both devices allow me to charge my devices quickly. If there is ample sunlight where I am such as at the beach, at the lake, in a park, I tend to use the solar charger. I get it out of my bag, open it up so the panels are directed at the sun and connect it to my phone. I have free and unlimited charging capabilities all day long. If I’m in the middle of the woods with a thick canopy or even a local coffee shop where all the plugs are taken, I simply bust out my battery pack.

When it comes to both of the charging devices above, obviously the solar would be the best bang for your buck as it’s free energy thanks to the sun. But, being that conditions will not always be ideal, having the backup battery pack is always a great idea. Something else that I’m looking to purchase to make my life even easier is a dedicated battery pack that can charge all of my devices, as well as my laptop if I ever chose to take that with me. Something that I can be away from home and the office for days without the need for electricity to charge my devices. Think of the situation where you are in a cabin in the middle of the woods without any electric. You’d still want to use your devices and work as a traveling freelancer, right?

The other device that I can’t live without is a wireless keyboard. Typing on my iPhone or iPad is enough to drive me insane. I’m not saying I can’t type fast on them, but I’m much more efficient when I use a keyboard and I highly recommend using one. The key is to get one that pairs easily, is sleek and slim, and is large enough that you can type quickly with it. Some keyboards are so tiny that it’s like typing on a tablet anyways and therefore wouldn’t give you much benefit or difference.

Last, but not certainly not least, I can’t live without a cloud-based storage program. For that, I use Dropbox. Dropbox allows me to save and access documents while I’m “out of the office.” I can email documents and files directly from Dropbox and give clients access to their dedicated folders which makes my life and theirs easier. In addition, I have my settings set to upload all photos I take from either my iPhone or iPad. This not only saves storage on my devices, but it also makes the images available no matter where I am in the world. If you click here and use my Dropbox link, you can get 500 MB of free storage on me!
