Best CLA Supplements For Weight Loss

CLA supplements (or conjugated linoleic acid) has been researched for years with mixed reviews. Some swear by the supplement, which has said to be helpful in aiding weight loss and even building lean muscle mass, while others don’t really see a benefit at all. What we do know is that CLA supplements are not a stimulant and therefore shouldn’t be thrown in the same category as many fat burners on the market that are stimulant-heavy. CLA is a natural weight loss product that works slowly without any jittery effects and supplies a clean form of energy production.

There are studies that have shown CLA to be effective at reducing overall fat mass as well as simultaneously increasing lean muscle mass. Is this a product you should consider adding to your regimen? That remains up for debate but first let’s lay the groundwork for what CLA is, the benefits, some products to consider, and from there help you move towards a decision that’s best-suited for your individual needs.

What Are CLA Supplements and How Do They Work?

Let’s establish that CLA is an omega-6 fatty acid (polyunsaturated fatty acid) found in natural food sources like beef and dairy products. That said, the overall quantity of CLA coming from those whole food sources is small when compared to utilizing actual CLA supplements. But, the supplement version is made by chemically altering safflower or sunflower oil (vegetable oils).

CLA supplements may aid in reducing hunger which reduces overall calories consumed each day and increases the rate at which the body burns fat.  Initially, the benefits of CLA supplements had shown a significant benefit, but those studies were done on mice. But a study published in The Journal of Nutrition showed that a reduction in body fat mass is possible in overweight or obese individuals. In those individuals, some investigations have shown that CLA supplements can reduce body fat, improve insulin resistance and alter body composition while promoting increased lean mass.

It’s also of note here that in the above study, the same effects were not prevalent — albeit with a test group of only 60 people — in individuals who have low body fat or lift weights. Research in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition explained that CLA supplementation may also have ant-inflammatory effects and reduce fatigue.

To date, there isn’t an significant research on the effects of CLA supplementation alone on weight loss and more data is needed to conclude whether CLA supplements have a direct effect on weight loss. While it may be possible that CLA can potentially aid weight loss, there are also studies that show CLA to have little or no effect at all. So, before you spend your hard-earned money on CLA, you need to decide if it’s worth the risk of not getting any benefits at all from its use.
